Resist the urge to use deep shelves to maximize space! You are creating a hopeless hole where you will continually be at war with the contents. A mix of  9" - 12" - or 18" deep shelving should be used. Follow these guidelines for maximum efficiency of stocking food 1- 2 items deep and use adjustable shelving for flexible control.

The charts below show selected grocery items and how their width compares to shelf depth.  Following the rule of stocking 1-2 items deep, the 9" shelf depth is the optimum depth for most food package sizes for efficient use of space (see chart #1).  The 12" depth is still necessary for pantry items of that depth (chart #2), and the 18" depth is ideal for small appliances and bulky items.  You may consider taking smaller items, like Jello ® boxes, and storing them in their own box to be placed on a deeper, 12" shelf.  It looks like shelving height set at 6 1/2" - 7" apart will take in many canned goods.  Setting heights at 10" - 12 1/2" apart will take in the next group of containers.
